Children entering the programme are those who have the most difficulty in reading and writing after about one year at school. Regardless of any other kind of problem, Reading Recovery is directed at those children who are the lowest achievers in their class.

The programme differs for every child. It begins with what the child can do (however little), and builds upon what the child needs to learn to do next.

The teaching is individually designed and individually delivered. Each child has an intensive half-hour programme of daily instruction which supplements the regular class teaching.

The focus of each lesson is on comprehending messages in reading and constructing messages in writing. Children learn to attend to the detail of print without losing the focus on meaning. Reading Recovery equips children with ways of increasing their own control of reading and writing so that they can continue to learn on their own.

The Reading Recovery programme is completed when the child is judged to be able to cope well with reading and writing, and to work successfully with the average group in the classroom. This takes an average of 20 weeks.
